Fireproof Day 18

The Reluctant Dragon
Worthless Promises

Why do we think we know better than God? It amazes me that even though we have His word and clear instructions on how to make the right decisions, that for some weird reason, we think we know best and follow our hearts rather than directing them. But there's a problem with our hearts - they can't be trusted.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5 (ESV)

Our own understanding will betray us. Only when we trust in the Lord with our hearts can we be sure of making the right decisions in life and in our relationships. When Israel failed to heed God's word concerning joining forces with Egypt against Assyria, Israel went into captivity. Judah on the other hand, the southern Kingdom, followed God's instructions and was spared the captivity and all the pain and heartache that went along with it. The verse I want to draw on is this:

Egypt's help is worthless and empty; therefore I have called her "Rahab who sits still." Isaiah 30:7 (ESV)

The Hebrew "Rahab who sits still" refers to a mythical sea monster that represents chaos in ancient literature. The Living Bible calls her "The Reluctant Dragon."

Anytime we listen to the voices and culture around us rather that heeding God's word and instructions for us, we will end up in chaos because we have chosen to follow The Reluctant Dragon, which will always take us into captivity. God's word is clear and when followed will keep us from falling into the traps of poor advice. The world says get even; God says forgive. The world says follow your heart; God says keep His word. The world says God wants you to be happy; God says He wants you to be holy.

Anytime you're facing a decision in life, don't listen to The Reluctant Dragon; instead heed God's word and experience His freedom.

Until Tomorrow,

Pastor Steve
