Fireproof Day 17

Fearing the Future
Longing for yesterday

Why do we make such poor decisions? And why do they have to be so costly? To continue yesterday’s conversation; I think much of what we do is fear based. How does fear blow things out of proportion? Because we worry about and dwell on things that we can neither control or change but since time is marching on, we desperately seek to make some radical change in life to cope with these new circumstances we find ourselves in everyday. Let me explain.

Men have mid-life crises (trade cars or women). Women have face lifts and tummy tucks (trade post-baby weight for version 2.1). We try fad diets and new hairdos. We go from no hair to grow hair. Why all this fuss? Because we fear the future (what we’re becoming) as well as long for yesterday (what we were) and that drives us to make really dumb decisions about everything from relationships to purchases. Why is it that when people “trade up” for a newer model (cars or relationships) it’s not until arriving home with the “new model” that all of a sudden thoughts of upkeep and payments kick in? Call it what you will but anytime you get to longing for what was more than being committed to what is you’re asking for trouble with a capital T. So what’s a person to do? How about this advice:

"I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:13-14 (NLT)

Yesterday’s memories are just that – memories. Whether good or bad, success or failures, they do not determine the strength of our relationships for tomorrow. But when we turn our attention toward the goal of making our service to God our #1 priority, and immediately behind that, doing all we can to build our relationships in a Godly fashion, that will change the outcome of all our today’s and tomorrow’s. Focus on one thing: On what God’s got in store for your future relationships and how you can serve Him with your life today.

Until Tomorrow,

Pastor Steve
