Two Signs of a Growing Church

When Marylin and I attended the Purpose Driven Network Conference at Saddleback a few weeks ago, one of the key points made about a growing church was this: "There are two signs of a growing church: The singing gets better and the the people hang around longer. If you have a church where everyone leaves as soon as it's over, you don't have church, you have a concert." I believe every church may have both. It depends on the heart of the worshiper or attender.

People go to church for many reasons. Some are worshippers and can't wait to get there, be with their friends, and be a part of the singing and message. They are the family called "church" and are likely to serve, hang around, and visit after the service. Some go because it is the thing to do and maybe if we do it, "church" will bring some magic into my life and things will be better. They generally scoot out when the final prayer is said.

But there is one more group; the seeker. They are searching for meaning to life and find it in a relationship with Jesus Christ, the True Seeker. For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost. Luke 19:10 (NLT) Ten people came to that crossroad this weekend and said yes to becoming a follower of Christ. What an awesome God we serve!

So, it doesn't matter why people attend. What matters is God's word is powerful and when people hear it, and then do it, it is life changing to be sure. So let's be the family Paul commends in his letter to the Romans:

Don't just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God's people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. Romans 12:9-13 (NLT)

So this coming weekend, wherever you may worship, be a part of a GROWING CHURCH - Sing it loud and stay awhile! You might just find what you're seeking for.
